Plot
In a Himalayan polyandrous village, pregnant PEMA is tested when her husband disappears. Together with her monk brother-in-law, her de facto spouse, she searches for him in the wild, making her own discoveries along the way. Nepal’s official entry in the Best International Feature Film category; 97th Academy Awards in 2025. It’s rare for a film to capture the human condition through a regional story.
The visual story is captivating
You don’t even need to understand the language or read subtitles. Plot Summary: The story follows our main character, Pam, who is married to 3 brothers at the beginning of the film. The first thought that will occur to anyone from a privileged background might be “how primitive”. However, if you watch along, you can see why that is.
Characters: Amazing characters with motivations and flaws
The film follows her life in this village with the great Himalayas in the background. Their daily events and how ignorance affects their lives. It also seems to me to reflect the true essence of the Eastern Dharma faith in a way I have never seen before. The lead actor’s performance is so mesmerizing that it stuck with me throughout the runtime and I couldn’t look away.
Visuals: Everything you talk about
Her character arc from an innocent girl with bright eyes to a person of strong conviction and conviction is subtle and powerful. I really liked the use of color. I want that yellow sweater now. The environment shots juxtaposed against the characters were amazing.
Overall, I really liked this movie
However, I was thinking of Lawrence of Arabia, and that movie could have used some wider shots of the snow and mountains to describe the setting a bit more. It’s a slow burn, so keep that in mind. You won’t run out of top dramas or exciting plot twists. What you will find is human emotion and a journey within.
